First impressions – on board the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid

We’re yet to drive the new Cayenne S Hybrid but impressions from the passenger seat reveal Porsche’s first series production petrol-electric model will be a clear thorn in the side of rivals such as the BMW X6, Lexus RX400 H and Mercedes-Benz M400 Hybrid.

With performance – both off the line and through the gears – on par with the 400bhp naturally-aspirated 4.8-litre V8 Cayenne S, the new four wheel drive displays exceptional levels of mechanical refinement without any indication of the complex processes taken by its advanced driveline, which was developed in a joint venture between Porsche’s own Weissach based engineers and their counterparts at Volkswagen’s engineering centre in Braunschweig, Germany.

Porsche Cayenne Hybrid – full details

Step off is typical strong, with the electric motor and its 184lb ft of torque providing primary propulsion from standstill up to speeds of 50km/h or until the energy level of the battery runs low.

The only indication of the introduction of the petrol engine – the same unit used by Audi in the S4 – to the drive process from the passenger seat is when the needle on the rev counter – now placed in the centre of the instrument binnacle as with Porsche’s more sporting models – springs to life.

At loads under 2500rpm, the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 is so well isolated from the cabin its operation is barely audible. Under greater throttle load there is a low level growl as acceleration builds but it is never over bearing.

Out on the motorway the over riding impression is of wind noise around the large exterior mirrors. The decoupling of the clutch at speed occurs seamlessly when the driver backs off from the throttle, allowing the Cayenne S Hybrid to coast at zero revs in a state not dissimilar to a bicycle when it is freewheeling with the engine fully disengaged.

Further to the mechanical aspects of the new Porsche, there has been a wholesale improvement in interior ambiance. The new dashboard, similar in style to that gracing the Panamera, is of a much higher quality than that of the first generation Cayenne.

The question that now remains is: how much will Porsche charge for it?

2009 Cadillac CTS-V Hennessey V700 605 RWHP

This car has 605 Rear wheel Horse Power with it’s modified supercharged V8 Corvette ZR-1 engine. It does 0-60 in McLaren F1 territory and can hit close to 200 Mph. It sounds fantastic. All cars should sound like this. Turn up the volume.

New Jaguar XJ

Jaguar have just announced that an all-new Jaguar XJ will make its public debut this July. And the rotten teases in the Gaydon press office have released just this one bird’s eye view of the new saloon. Speaking at Auto Shanghai 2009, Jaguar Cars Managing Director, Mike O’Driscoll confirmed that the all-new XJ will go on sale at the end of 2009 – but will officially be revealed on July 9th in London.

It will be the first car to feature the next-generation of Jaguar’s aerospace-inspired aluminium body architecture.

All of Jaguar’s XJ ultra-efficient Gen III petrol and diesel engines will be available in the new XJ, including the already acclaimed V6 diesel and 510 bhp supercharged V8. There will be a choice of standard or long wheelbase models – as well as a panoramic glass roof highlighted in the first picture.

With the success of the excellent XF, It’s difficult to see what space the XJ is going to occupy in the Jag Pantheon. We’ll just have to wait and see how the final release looks, feels and drives.

But can there really be room for two completely different mid size luxury saloons from Jaguar?

In our humble opinion, the loveliest Jag ever to grace our roads is the incomparable XK 120, that was produced way back in 1948. Now that’s what we call a panoramic roof.

2010 Jaguar XJ

The photo above ( Courtesy of Auto Express ) is that of the 2010 Jaguar XJ. The new XJ looks to have taken some styling cues from the handsome XF and is gunning for 7 Series and S Class business.
Rumor has it that the base engine will be 385 HP V8 with a 503 HP Supercharged V8 at the flagship model designed to give the S63 and the 760 a run for the money.
A diesel option is also likely.
I look forward to seeing the new model in the flesh and I wish Jaguar great success.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Preview

Last month Chrysler confirmed that its Street and Racing Technology (SRT) division is safe from the company?s current budgetary cutbacks. Expect to see new models to come out from this performance section in the coming years.

The first of these could be a replacement for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, which has been previewed today in this official teaser sketch showing a new version based on the recently revealed 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee that will likely arrive sometime in 2011. Power is expected to come from a brand new 6.4-liter, HEMI V8 engine rated at around the 500 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque.

Hopefully, this will be enough to allow the SRT8-prepped Jeep to cement its title as the world?s fastest SUV now that the pair of M SUVs from BMW will be coming out. In addition to the power transplant, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 will also sport a subtle body kit, a lowered ride height, stiffed suspension, and chunky SRT 5-spoke wheels housing uprated brakes.

There will also be a new engine that will be called the 392 HEMI (in reference to its capacity in cubic inches) and is expected to first appear in updated versions of the Dodge Challenger and Charger in 2011.
