CDNs: Limelight now offers turnkey customizing and monetizing media delivery in a mobile world
According to Nielsen(1), US consumers are watching more content per month than ever before, and viewing is wide spread across three screens: traditional television, Web browsers, and media-enabled mobile devices. As audiences continue to fragment across devices, publishers need a simple way to deliver content wherever those audiences go. LimelightREACH and LimelightADS solve this problem by using contextual awareness and an intelligent delivery platform to customize media assets on the fly. The technology delivers a high-quality playback experience for consumers and new targeted revenue opportunities for content publishers. This means publishers can create content once, yet distribute and monetize it across many networks and connected devices.
“Consumer viewing habits are evolving rapidly with the expectation that media should be available not just at home, but on the go. As a result, many of our customers are looking at aggressively expanding the reach of their online media in the mobile arena,” said Bill Loewenthal, vice president and general manager, mobility and monetization solutions, Limelight Networks. “Our solution is a combination of mobility products and robust, media-grade infrastructure that provides the scale necessary to support ever-growing audiences, and the field-proven success of mobile infrastructure technologies that target and personalize media delivery.”
LimelightREACH uses the company’s intelligent global computing platform to auto-detect end-user devices and deliver device-optimized media files, with no change in the publishing process, for the best consumer media experience. The solution enables publishers to distribute properly-formatted content to almost any media-enabled mobile handset — from early video-capable phones to smartphones such as the Apple iPhone™ 3GS or Palm Pre™ — using a single, Universal URL. Based on an ever-growing library of device profiles, LimelightREACH delivers the right file over the right protocol and network to the specific device that requested the content. Through an open architecture, LimelightREACH can be paired with Limelight Networks’ own media-grade content delivery service, or service from other major CDN providers.
LimelightADS helps publishers move beyond the Web browser to reach audiences in widgets, mobile applications, video games, and more. The service allows publishers to present dynamic pre-, mid-, or post-roll video and audio advertising into media that is delivered to mobile or connected users. LimelightADS works seamlessly with a publisher’s existing ad insertion process, integrating directly into leading ad decision engines like DoubleClick DART and Microsoft Atlas, and allowing publishers to maintain any existing management interface for measuring ad success. Publishers can change ads dynamically and even rotate multiple campaigns and advertisers within the same content segment. With LimelightADS, publishers remain in control, managing their ad sales and operations as they always have — whether they are using their own internal ad sales teams or are working through a trusted partner. Limelight Networks supports Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) and Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) mobile video standards.

Mobile: Growth of mobile apps seen as peaking at 10 million apps in 2020, becoming more personal and more practical
However, GetJar say, the developer community will decline drastically as each developer makes less money.
According to the Symbian Foundation, newly in the developer market, apps will become more personal and practical as their numbers grow.
The comments were made at the MobileBeat conference in San Francisco.
“Apps will be as big if not bigger than the internet,” according to Ilja Laurs, chief executive of GetJar, a leading independent application store.
“They will peak at around 100,000 by the end of the year. That will be a tipping point and after that there will be a gradual fall in the rate of development.
“The full blossom will come in ten years and mobile apps will become as popular as websites are today with consumers,” Mr Laurs told BBC News.
Get Ready; Windows Marketplace for Mobile Offers Millions of Potential New Customers
My name is Todd Brix and I am the Senior Director for Mobile Platform Services Product Management at Microsoft. I am on site at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans to talk about Windows Marketplace for Mobile and the terrific opportunity it represents for developers and partners. Given the enthusiasm we’ve seen around Windows Marketplace since we announced it earlier this year, I’m excited to have this opportunity to provide an update and hopefully address some of the feedback we’ve received. In terms of milestones, I’m pleased to report that Windows Marketplace is on schedule to open for submissions in 29 supported countries* on July 27th. We’re already working with a wide range of leading developers for both business and consumer applications and will soon be able to make available a new wave of applications that will be ready for download when Windows Marketplace launches with Windows Mobile 6.5 in the fall. To make things a little more interesting, later this month we’ll also be announcing the details of a developer contest that will kick off at launch.
We’re working hard to create a new experience for mobile users and developers alike; where users can easily discover and confidently purchase and download applications for work, life or play and developers feel good about the submission process and are able to reach a new market for their mobile applications. In fact, we’re announcing today that by the end of 2009 Windows Marketplace will also be available to Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 devices. This means that developers will have an opportunity to reach more than 30 million Windows Mobile devices. To help those millions of business users find what they’re looking for, we’re also unveiling the Windows Marketplace Business Center; a category in Windows Marketplace that will contain mobile business applications across several common industries and line of business functions from leading companies that include Avanade UK, Formotus, Ilium Software, Pyxis Mobile and WebIS. Business Center is another way for our partners to differentiate themselves and showcase their business applications, while making it easier for users to locate and purchase the latest mobile business tools.

I’ll be on site at the Worldwide Partner Conference today talking to partners and presenting our Windows Marketplace strategy and even offering a brief demonstration on the main stage on Wednesday morning. Throughout the event, I’ll be gathering feedback and doing my best to drive registration and application submissions for July 27th. My team and I are eager to get your feedback and will do our best to address your comments and questions in the days and weeks ahead.

Mobile: Ericsson is offering an innovative solution allowing users to get discounts of up to 99 percent based on low levels of network usage levels
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) is introducing an innovative, easy-to-use solution that allows users to get discounts on mobile call rates of up to 99 percent based on the network load at their location. Designed in Africa to make communication more affordable for users in low-income markets, Ericsson’s Dynamic Discount solution is now generating interest globally.
Ericsson’s new solution gives consumers the opportunity to see the discount currently available at their location on their mobile phone’s screen in real-time. People using this solution can receive call discounts of up to 99 percent by calling during low-traffic periods. The Dynamic Discount solution is available to any subscriber charged in real-time, whether pre-paid or part of a converged charging system. Consumers can activate the solution by simply punching in a code.
Experiences from different markets have been positive. An African operator reported rapid uptake, with two million subscribers using the service after only two months, corresponding to 60 percent of the operators’ total subscribers. At the same time, usage increased by 70 percent.
With operators around the world facing a harsh financial climate and increased competition, the solution is also gaining interest in mature markets.
Jan Wäreby, Senior Vice President and Head of Multimedia at Ericsson, says the innovative solution marks a shift in application development: “The Dynamic Discount solution was created in one of our Innovation Centers in South Africa, and has been launched commercially by 14 operators with great success. We see great opportunities in bringing applications that have been developed in emerging markets to the rest of the world. Operators in mature markets can use these applications to tackle their own financial and competitive challenges.”
The Ericsson mobile Innovation Center was founded in 2008 to develop mobile applications focusing on meeting the needs of poor and rural populations. Today, the center is getting global attention as more of its applications are proving suitable and beneficial for mature markets and developed countries as well.
Dynamic Discount solution lets operators discount call rates based on traffic in a particular cell, introducing a completely new way to price telecom services. Operator benefits include reduced churn and network congestion, and increased total revenues from existing network infrastructure investments. Improved quality of service benefits both the operator and the consumer.
Ericsson works continuously with operators to identify business opportunities and develop solutions that address the specific needs of users in emerging markets. Operators addressing this segment face challenges due to low average revenue per user (ARPU), price-sensitive consumers and barriers to entry resulting from price of calls. .
Ericsson’s Dynamic Discount solution was named the most innovative solution during the AfricaCom Awards in 2008.
BizTalk RFID Mobile
Earlier this month, Microsoft announced the general availability of the latest addition to the BizTalk Server RFID platform – BizTalk RFID Mobile, an RFID platform for mobile devices based on Windows CE and Windows Mobile. BizTalk RFID Mobile consists of a runtime engine as well as tools and components to develop, deploy, and manage RFID solutions on mobile devices.
Developers, independent software vendors and systems integrators can build device-agnostic mobile applications utilizing RFID and sensor data on devices running Windows CE or Windows Mobile 5.0, 6.0, and 6.1. Events and data can be stored on the mobile device using a SQL sink service, and then communicated to the BizTalk Server RFID platform for further analysis. Mobile devices can be discovered, queried, and managed from the BizTalk Server RFID platform. Support for industry-ratified standards like the Low-level Reader Protocol (LLRP) and the Tag Data Translation (TDT) library provides a standards-based approach to discover, provision and troubleshoot RFID devices, in addition to surfacing business-relevant attributes from RFID tags
